Backtest Reality Check

Most traders know backtests can fail. The hard part is facing whether their own strategy is failing now.

Backtest reality

A backtest is not proof

A backtest is a rehearsal, not a guarantee about the future. It is useful because it forces a strategy to reveal assumptions: entry timing, exit behavior, drawdown paths, cost sensitivity, and periods where the logic becomes fragile.

The point is not to admire the equity curve. The point is to ask what had to be true for that curve to exist, and whether those conditions are still believable.

No holy grail

A strategy is not a holy grail. It is a niche.

Every strategy depends on a niche: a behavioral bias, structural inefficiency, liquidity condition, volatility regime, or risk premium. When the niche changes, the same rules can begin producing a very different risk profile.

The diagnostic question is not whether a strategy once made money. The diagnostic question is what the strategy depends on, how clearly that dependency is evidenced, and what can break it.

The hard part

Why knowing is not enough

Most traders already know the vocabulary: overfitting, future leakage, slippage, survivorship bias, regime change, execution mismatch. Knowing the list does not make the decision easy.

The deeper problem is emotional attachment. A strategy can become sunk cost, identity, hope, and pressure. The hardest moment is not learning that backtests can fail. It is knowing when to stop believing your own strategy.

Profit is an outcome, not a diagnosis.

Diagnostic scope

What StratVitals diagnoses

StratVitals helps strategy builders look at evidence quality before they risk more real capital or spend more time defending a fragile idea.

  • Evidence quality
  • Data completeness
  • Overfitting risk
  • Cost and slippage assumptions
  • Drawdown path
  • Regime sensitivity
  • Live-readiness
  • Failure modes
  • Diagnostic Confidence
  • Next evidence needed

Trust question

Why we do not sell our own strategy

We do not ask you to trust our strategy. We help you test whether you should still trust yours.

StratVitals is a diagnostic service, not a signal service. Internal strategy research informs the diagnostic framework, but private results are not used as client performance promises.

A private strategy result does not prove another strategy is safe, robust, or executable. Your strategy still needs its own evidence, its own assumptions checked, and its own failure modes made visible.

Next step
